2013/14 IAF Grassroots Development Fellowship Program in USA


Inter-American Foundation offers Grassroots Development Fellowships Program for 15 doctoral students in USA . These fellowships provide support for field research in independent countries in Latin America or the Caribbean except Cuba. The applicant must be a PhD student, currently enrolled in a US university. The students of United States or of an independent country in Latin America or the Caribbean except Cuba can apply for this scholarship. The fellowship award covers airfare, monthly allowance, stipend, accident and sickness insurance. The Institute of International Education has partnered with the Inter-American Foundation to administer its Grassroots Development Fellowship Program.Submit all the application material online or by email by January 22, 2013.

Eligibility:-PhD candidates who are currently enrolled at a U.S. university and are citizens of the United States or of an independent country in Latin America or the Caribbean except Cuba, may apply.
-Before beginning research funded under the IAF Fellowship, students must have advanced to candidacy for a PhD in the social sciences, physical sciences, technical fields or other disciplines as related to grassroots development issues in Latin America or the Caribbean.
Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: The students of United States or of an independent country in Latin America or the Caribbean except Cuba may apply for this fellowship.
Scholarship Description: To complement its work, the IAF has reinstated its Fellowships for candidates for PhD degrees from United States universities as they conduct their dissertation research. IAF’s Fellowships are intended to increase awareness of grassroots development efforts while building a community of professionals and scholars knowledgeable in the subject. Fellows examine the efforts of the rural and urban poor to improve their lives, their methods of organization and production, and the policies and programs designed to alleviate their poverty. The IAF disseminates research findings of its Fellows to a broad audience concerned with development.
Number of awards offered: 15 Fellowships are offered.
Duration of award(s): It is applicable for between four to 12 months.
What does it cover? Fellowship awards include a research allowance of up to $3,000; a $1,500 monthly stipend for a period from between four to 12 months, international round trip transportation to the research site, health insurance and attendance at a mandatory mid-year conference.
Selection Criteria: Awards are based on both development and scholarly criteria.
Notification: All applicants can expect notification on their status by May 1, of the year of application.
