2013 PhD Studentship in Medical Humanities at the University of Leicester in UK


The Centre for Medical Humanities is offering fee-waiver studentship for October 2013 entry to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. The studentship is available for UK/EU applicants who wish to pursue PhD in any area of medical history or the wider medical humanities. The studentship will pay full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for three years. Applicants applying for the studentship must have a first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in the relevant discipline and meet the University’s standard English language entry requirements. Students must apply till 8th March 2013.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline and meet the University’s Standard English language entry requirements. It is expected that applicants will have a relevant Masters degree with merit or distinction or be able to show evidence that they will achieve this before October 2013.
This studentship is only available to new applicants who are eligible to pay the UK/EU tuition fee – i.e., those who are permanently resident in the UK or another EU country.

Scholarship Description: The studentship is open to applicants wishing to pursue doctoral research in any area of medical history or the wider medical humanities. However, preference may be given to applicants expressing interest in one of the six core interdisciplinary themes which will structure the activities of the Centre over the next five years: Miracle Cures, 1450-2018, Eating Yourself Well, Blood, Degeneration and Decay, Boundaries of Life and Death, Repair and Re-Use (of the Body and Body Parts). They welcome applications from applicants wishing to follow the standard PhD submission route (i.e., a written thesis) as well as applicants whose research proposal would lend itself to a practice-based route (i.e., submission comprising both a written thesis and a created artefact). The practice-based route facilitates the communication of research in new forms such as audio-visual productions. Both the written and practical components of the thesis should form a coherent whole that demonstrates original research and contains material that is deemed worthy of publication/public exhibition. Applicants interested in following this route are encouraged to contact the Centre to discuss the proposed format of their thesis.
